Punjab win 18th National Rugby Championship

LAHORE: Punjab defeated Pakistan Police 36-0 in the final to win the 18th National Rugby Championship for Servis Cup here on Sunday. Runners-up Police were undefeated in the two-day event until the final where they faced more experienced Punjab, who had services of five Pakistan national players. Police had just two wingers who had represented the national squad. Pakistan WAPDA came third after beating Islamabad 31-12. There was also a Plate competition final for the fifth and sixth ranked teams: Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) defeated Punjab B 10-5. The Bowl competition was won by first time entrants FATA who beat LUMS B 12-10. Khalid Bhatti of Police was adjudged player of the tournament for the second year in a row. Lt Gen Agha Jahangir Ali Khan, who is the patron of the Pakistan Rugby Union (PRU), was the chief guest at the prize distribution ceremony. He appreciated the level of rugby and the big participation from all corners of Pakistan. “The Pakistan rugby team is due to play a test match against powerful China in Kuala Lumpur on June 3 this year,” said a spokesman for the PRU.
